Spain's beloved Brass Quintet Friday, October 15, 2010
7:30pm - Corpus Christi Cathedral No Charge |
|
The New York Times wrote "stunning" and "a magnificent ensemble, a brilliant winner!", the Spanish Brass is one of world's foremost brass quintets. Since winning the First Prize in the 6th "Ville de Narbonne" (France) International Competition for Brass Quintets in 1996, considered the world's most prestigious event of its type, they have performed worldwide and are recognized as one of the most dynamic and established brass ensembles on the international scene. Their many US tours have made them a favorite of American audiences. With their eclectic repertoire and state-of-the-art staging, concert attendees will experience "a concert scene upside down (musicians standing on their head), making child's play of difficult music (involving kids from the audience), flooring audiences (and themselves) with their incredible stage presence! A great opener for our 27th Resounding Season for the entire family! |

Praised by the Washington Post for their "seductive beauty" and "virtuosic gusto," the Brazilian Guitar Quartet has established itself as one of world's leading guitar ensembles. The group's unique combination, of regular six-string and extended-range, eight-string guitars, allows for the exploration of an original and unusual repertoire. In their ten years of activity, the BGQ has performed more than 300 concerts in four continents, often receiving ecstatic audience responses, garnering rave reviews and meeting sold-out halls. Highlights of the BGQ's past seasons include performances at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the National Gallery in Washington, DC, Hong Kong International Arts Festival, Musica Mundi Festival in Brussels, Belgium, Festival Internacional de Guitarra de Monterrey in Mexico, Adelaide International Guitar Festival in Australia, Dundee Guitar Festival in Scotland and Festival Internacional de Guitarra de Santo Tirso in Portugal, besides numerous performances and recordings for the National Public Radio - NPR in Washington, DC. |

The World's Most Beloved Choir Friday - February 18, 2011 7:30 pm - Corpus Christi Cathedral No Charge |

The world's most beloved choir returns to their TEXAS home - the newly refurbished acoustical setting of Corpus Christi Cathedral, where attendees will experience their heavenly voices with an all new program. Thrilling audiences for over 500 years, in 1498, more than half a millennium ago, Emperor Maximilian I moved his court and his court musicians from Innsbruck to Vienna. He gave specific instructions that there were to be six boys among his musicians - the Vienna Boys Choir. Until 1918, the choir sang exclusively for the imperial court, at mass, at private concerts and functions and on state occasions. Today there are around 100 choristers between the ages of ten and fourteen, divided into four touring choirs. The four choirs give around 300 concerts and performances each year in front of almost half a million people. Each group spends nine to eleven weeks of the school year on tour. They visit virtually all European countries, and they are frequent guests in Asia, Australia and the Americas. Their Cathedral program will include everything from medieval to contemporary songs highlighted with the great Viennese waltz's of Johann Strauss and a fully staged Children's Opera. |

Featuring the Cathedral Choirs and Festival Orchestra Directed by Lee Gwozdz and Dr. Guadalupe Rivera, Jr. Sunday - May 22, 2011 6:00 pm - Corpus Christi Cathedral No Charge |
|
Celebrating the lives and memories of Cathedral Choir members who have passed on, the Cathedral Choirs and Festival Orchestra will pay tribute to their loved ones with music of eternity among which will feature Gabriel Faure's REQUIEM. Of the many settings of the Requiem, this is probably the most widely loved. In comparison with the large-scale masterpieces of Verdi, Brahms and Berlioz, Faure's setting seems gentle and unassuming, yet it is this very quality of understatement which contributes so eloquently to the work's universal appeal. Attendees will be moved by the ethereal beauty of this humble masterpiece. The Cathedral Youth Chorale will perform this work in the Summer of 2011 at Disney Hall in Los Angeles as a part of the Pueri Cantores High School National Festival under the direction of Maestro Paul Salamunovich, assisted by Lee Gwozdz. |
The Cathedral Concert Series is funded in part by The Texas Commission on the Arts along with Corporate Sponsors, Private Grants, and individual donors.
