Considered the best Girls' Chorus in the World, the Czech Girls' Choir (Jitro), from the East Bohemian city of Hradec Kralove, was founded in 1973. With its first international success in 1977, they quickly became recognized as one of the best choirs in Czechoslovakia, under the direction of Jiri Skopal. Marking their second appearance on our Cathedral Concert Series, The Czech Girls' Choir has toured internationally for over fifteen years, and returns to Texas for the first time since 1993, when they sang for the American Choral Directors' Association's National Conference, receiving a HUGE ovation from the members. JITRO'S Cathedral program will feature an extensive repertoire from sixteenth century polyphony to contemporary music - sure to resound in the fabled acoustics of Corpus Christi Cathedral. |

Joan of Arc (1928) A Silent Film with "live" orchestra and chorus Gillian Anderson, Conductor Sunday- March 30, 2003 7:00 p.m - Corpus Christi Cathedral No Charge |
In the 1920's era, early film consisted of a mechanical moving image and "LIVE" orchestral accompaniment. Screenings in the 20's were actual theatrical events, a far cry from the average movie-going experience of today. In fact, until 1928-29, there were over 2,500 orchestras in movie theaters throughout the United States. Keeping our Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra in synch with the film will be conductor, musicologist Gillian Anderson, a specialist in American music and film music. The Passion of Joan of Arc, starring French Silent Film star - Renee Falconetti as the martyred saint, is based on the actual transcripts of the 15th century trial. Carl Dreyer's 1928 film is a powerful and moving account of Joan the Martyr. The film, with English subtitles, is devout without being preachy, retaining much of the power it had on its initial audiences. The Cathedral Concert Series brings yet another unique presentation to the Coastal Bend. |
The Cathedral Concert Series is funded in part by The Texas Commission on the Arts and The City of Corpus Christi Arts and Cultural Commission along with Corporate Sponsors, Private Grants, and individual donors.
