For more than 500 years, the Vienna Choir Boys have enjoyed the reputation as one of the world's most cherished ensembles. Created by decree of the Hapsburg Emperor in 1498 and guardian of a distinguished tradition that binds the ensemble to many of Europe's most illustrious musical figures, the ensemble has become, at the same time, a modern, forward-looking institution that has moved confidently into the 21st century. The evening's program includes popular music from composers such as Copland and Bernstein, along with a Gregorian plainsong, followed by a motet for two choirs, announcing the birth of Christ. Following intermission, the Choir will perform Kodaly's Turot, and a humorous piece about a garden gnome abducted from the garden of the mayor of Reinfinitz, Der Gartenzwerg ous Reinfnitz by Gehringer. The program also includes traditional waltzes, folk songs and polkas from Vienna's "waltz king," Johann Strauss II. |

The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields was formed in 1959, by eleven enthusiastic musicians with the aim of performing in public without a conductor. The ensemble quickly took its place among the most recorded ensembles in history. The Chamber Ensemble was created in 1967 to perform the larger chamber works, from quintets to octets, with players who customarily work together, instead of the usual string quartet with additional guests. The spring tour is extensive and worldwide and includes thirteen cities. Corpus Christi is one of the lucky cities to receive this wonderful ensemble. Don't miss this opportunity to experience chamber music at its finest. |
